Facebook’s Instagram app in the last couple of years has become more than just a photo-sharing platform. The app is increasingly becoming a place for commerce, too. The service is already allowing brands to effectively put storefronts on their platform. Using this, users can click on the items they like with “shoppable tags“. Then the user will be taken to the brand’s website to make a purchase. But now, the scenario has changed. It is now working on ways to accept payments through the app itself. Now, a new feature in the app will allow users to add a credit or debit card and a pin for additional security. After completing the setup, users can also make purchases from within the app.
According to a report by TechCrunch, the Instagram payment system is now already visible to some users in the U.S. and U.K. The service is also starting in the field of booking appointments and making reservations. Currently, there are limited partners that will accept the payments directly from the app. But it is expected that by the end of this year the service will allow users to book movie tickets also.
What’s ahead for Instagram Payments:
The payment’s UI has three tabs. The first tab is Activity that shows the things user have recently purchased on the app. Next tab is Profile, where users can add their card details and contact info. Finally, the third tab is the Security tab that allows users to add a PIN to prevent unauthorized purchases from the service. By introducing the native payments, the service makes itself more attractive to smaller businesses. These businesses may not have the means to design and build strong mobile checkouts for payments. This move will also increase the value of the ads Instagram can offer, assuming that they boost conversion rates.
